Getting Rid of Tartar the Easy Way

No dog owner likes doggy breath... No dog likes to have his or her teeth brushed!  There is a simple solution that will not only clean the tartar off your dog's teeth, but will also help to prevent your dog from needing dentistry in the future.

What is the magic trick?  Marrow bone!!!  The protocol for using bone marrow bones as an aid in removing tartar is simple.  Have your butcher slice the bones into 1 to 2-inch slices. Freeze them and give one piece to your dog as often as is necessary to keep the tartar chipped off his/her teeth. Usually once a week is sufficient; it can take up to a month to see results. They should only be allowed to chew on the bone for 15 minutes or until the bone begins to thaw. We do not want them to actually chew up and eat the bone, resulting in bone fragments in the intestinal  tract.

Things to watch for

Make sure that the bone is big enough so that your dog doesn't choke. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, or a history of pancreatitis, the marrow bone may cause a stomach ache or potentially serous illness. Watch your pet closely the first time you offer your dog this dental hygiene aid, and call us if there is any problem.
